From saving the day by fixing holes in school uniforms to pushing fashion into the future, the world would not be the same without the miracle of the sewing machine… we would all still be slowly stitching by hand! Saturday the 13th June is a day to celebrate this incredible device invented in 1829 by Barthélemy Thimonnier.

Many of you will have been taught by your grandmothers, and have passed on your knowledge to your children and grandchildren, so we want to take this opportunity to say thank you for helping to keep the tradition alive today! Your passion for this therapeutic and creative art form is an inspiration to all of us.

Sewing is a fabulous craft to get involved with and fabrics are very much a part of our everyday life. Sewing gives you endless possibilities to enhance an outfit or help furnish your home. Juki

Another leader in innovation of sewing machines is of course Juki! They have been around now for over 80 years and have been regarded as true pioneers, implementing advancements in sewing that many followed, and so are used all over the world in sewing machines today. Some of these achievements include: producing the first rotalix needle take up system for the home sewing market in 1954, creating the first automatic thread trimmer and automatic needle threading technology available for home use in 1978, and developing the first auto-thread tension system for household machines in 1985… that’s just the tip of the iceberg!

“My top tip has to be it doesn’t need to be perfect. Take the pressure off and just enjoy all the relaxation sewing can bring… Most things can be done with a straight or zigzag stitch. I started on my grandmother’s 50-year-old sewing machine and managed to sew everything I needed. Look after the machine you have, a quick wipe round to get rid of fluff goes a long way! More than anything, enjoy!”
