Quilling is the art of modelling paper into different shapes and styles. This can be achieved by rolling strips of paper, and pinching or curving the resulting curls into various forms.

Get set up with the best (and correct) tools!
Get started with quilling! You must have these essential tools:
1. Paper quilling strips are lightweight so they are easy to roll, glue and attach to your designs. They come in a wide variety of colours.
2. A slotted quilling tool allows you to place one end of the paper through the tool twisting it to make the perfect coils.
3. A quilling board enables you to create shapes that are the same size. You can roll a coil and then allow it to bloom to the size of any of the circles on the board resulting in a neat and consistent style.
4. Liquid glue ensures that everything holds neatly together and you should look for a glue with a pen size opening to offer easier application.
5. And don’t forget this hack! Toothpicks are particularly handy for applying the glue and for helping you to roll your paper strips.
Start with the basic shapes
There are over thirty common quilling shapes, most of which are based on a basic coil shape. The most popular shapes include a heart scroll, an s-scroll and a teardrop shape. The basic quilling shapes are created by winding, pinching and curling and can be used to form other shapes from simple closed coils. Once you have mastered the basic shapes, combine a variety of them to make pictures and decorations. You could even include them on homemade cards (Valentine’s Day, anyone?!). There are endless possibilities for design!
A steady hand and control of the glue is key to creating a polished result
You only need a small amount of glue to attach your designs, and it’s always better to begin with a small amount and apply more if necessary. Make sure your hands are clean when you start, and it might be useful to keep a wet towel handy to wipe your fingers as craft!

Don’t worry if you can’t quite create the shapes you want to the first time around. Quilling is a very delicate art practice which requires patience, persistence and dedication. After all, practice makes perfect!
