Sew Your Own Cloud Mobile by Lore Green

Hi crafters! I hope you are all craft happy. For this blog post I thought I would share with you my personalised cloud mobile. The cloud is made from white cotton and the weather elements that dangle are made from felt and a little bit of fleece on the snowflake. It’s a project that can be adapted easily to your skill level, I kept the hand stitching simple by just using running stitch on all the weather elements and just a backstitch on the name but if you love hand stitching you can use all your skills to embellish the weather symbols even more. If you’re not keen on hand stitching, you can put the felt elements together with fabric glue. If you’d like to make your own mobile, you can download the pattern/templates below and follow just a few simple steps. Don‘t forget that you can always use the templates for other projects, for example the cloud template can be used on its own to make a small decorative cushion.

What you will need:
  • White fabric
  • Felt in various colours
  • Ribbons
  • Embroidery silk/skein for the name
  • Toy Stuffing
  • Embroidery hoop
  • Temporary fabric pen or pencil
  • Templates (#1,  #2,  #3, and #4)
  • White fleece (optional)
First, download and print off the templates then draw around the cloud template. Using your temporary fabric pen/pencil, write out the name of your choice in the centre of the cloud. Place the fabric in the embroidery hoop to stitch the name, I used a backstitch but a chain stitch would also look good. When you have finished stitching the name, cut out the cloud shape from the white fabric, one piece with the name on it and another plain one for the back. The cloud template includes a 1/2inch seam allowance.

Next, choose four lengths of ribbon for the felt weather elements and another piece of ribbon to make a loop to hang the cloud from. I found it easier to cut the ribbon to the exact length needed for the weather elements after I had stitched them into the cloud but you will need to cut the ribbon for the loop at the top to the correct length before you stitch that one into the cloud. The length of the ribbons is personal choice. Arrange the lengths of ribbon where you want them on the cloud then flip them in towards the middle of the cloud. Make sure the other ends of the ribbon go well into the seam allowance and are pinned/tacked in place. Carefully, lay the other cloud fabric piece over the ribbons and pin into place making sure that the loose ends of the ribbons are kept away from the seam allowance. Stitch around the cloud remembering to leave a gap in the stitching so the fabric can be turned right side around. After stitching the cloud and before turning the fabric inside out, carefully snip into the seam allowance all along the cloud then pull the fabric through the gap so it’s facing the right way.

Using the templates, cut two each of the sun shapes in your chosen colours of felt, then two each of the snowflake shapes, cut two lightning pieces and six raindrops. Stitch or glue the smaller sun and snowflake pieces onto the larger sun and snowflake pieces and arrange three of the raindrops so that they overlap onto one another, repeat the same layout with the other three raindrops. Sandwich the felt sun pieces over the ribbon from the cloud and stitch the felt pieces together, making sure to stitch in the ribbon.
Once all the weather elements are stitched together onto the ribbons it’s time to stuff the cloud. When the cloud is stuffed to your liking, stitch up the gap and you are finished.
Don’t forget to check out the Hochanda website for all your fabric needs and they usually have in stock everything needed to make this project across their brands.
Thanks for taking the time to read my blog post and I hope you enjoy sewing your own cloud mobile. Happy crafting!
