One for the Boys by Barbara McNaughton

Hello Crafters,
Do you struggle as much as I do to come up with suitable card ideas for the men in our lives? Give me pink and pretty any day, masculine takes me totally out of my comfort zone!
Being of African heritage, I thought I would take inspiration from the natural beauty of my homeland in putting together a birthday card for my husband. Pressed for time, I needed something simple yet effective and the fabulous Crafter’s Companion sparkle pens came to my rescue. Fabulous for creating colourful backgrounds, these are easy to use and dry in minutes.
Taking a selection of colours with a sunrise in mind, I set about blending bands of colour on a rectangle of watercolour card. Brown tones defined the hills in the distance and, mixed with greens, gave the impression of some plants in the foreground along with a deep blue river running along the bottom of the landscape.

Next I added some features to the bare landscape using a selection of grass, tree and bird stamps. To position my images accurately, I used the wonderful Tim Holtz Stamping Platform from Tonic Studios. Using this tool allows you to position your stamp exactly where you would like it to appear before closing the lid of the device, adhering the stamp to the lid which doubles as a stamping block.
I finished the design with a sentiment stamp from the Creative Expressions Lisa Horton Thoughtful Sentiments stamp set.

Lastly, I mounted the card front onto black card to frame the design and then onto a Kraft card blank.

And there we have your very quick and simple masculine card. What I love best about this technique is it makes me feel a little bit like an artist. Very sadly I cannot draw or paint to save my life but this has me feeling like a watercolour landscape artist – even if just for a minute!
Until next time, happy crafting!
Best wishes,
Barbara
